Basilica of the National Vow

The Basilica of the National Vow is a Roman Catholic church located in the UNESCO World Heritage listed historic city center of Quito, Ecuador. It is the largest neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas and one of the largest Neo-Gothic religious buildings of Latin America. Townspeople donated stones to the church’s construction and in exchange their names were engraved into the rock. The building was designed by architect Emilio Tarlier who was inspired by the Parisian cathedral of Notre Dame… Its construction started in 1890s and it is not finished yet, even it was opened officially by the Pope John Pope II in 1985. Local legend says that when the Basilica is completed, the end of the world will come…
